If you think that in reality the shepherds will never go off
to look for a new-born swaddled in a manger
that the angels will not sing in the fields
that the Magi will never come bringing gold, frankincense and myrrh
that “might is right” is always best
that the lamb will never lie down with the wolf
that the cow and the bear will never be led by a little child
that Monsieur Seguin’s nanny-goat will always be eaten in the morning
that little David will always be conquered by the giant Goliath
that the poor will never be comforted
that the meek will not inherit the earth
that the paralysed will never rise up
that the people will never be freed from slavery in Egypt
that no-one will ever say “I am with you until the end of the world”
that the stone of the tomb will never be rolled away
that it no one can ever die with a light of confidence in their eyes
then for you truly Christ is not risen!
