Translation Canon Tony Dickinson
In the midst of a great many trials,
Some people have known how to hold on to hope.
A certainty within them,
Or rather a promise, the promise
“God will come and everything will be fine”.
And God, they knew, never goes back on his word.
But when the time was fulfilled,
It’s a child that he has given them.
They were waiting for somebody strong,
Mighty, the Almighty,
To deliver them from their human condition.
Now, it is precisely in this human condition
That he was eager to join them.
From now on salvation is in their hands,
As the child from the crib
Rests in the arms of Mary.
Is God then awaiting from us what we are awaiting from him?
Salvation is there, it’s true, but in the gaze of a child.
The Saviour is there, as promised,
but he is a Saviour with us, Emmanuel.
“I have decided to save you”, he tells us,
“Go! I am sending you!”
A marvellous gesture of trust,
Christmas.
