Some images of God appeal to us.  The ones that bear thoughts of movement, creativity, transformation ; the ones that invite us to believe in God as working on embellishing the world, on enriching the possibilities of reality, on leading us towards a better future.

There are still more subtle images of Godthat we like as well : those related to a certain instability, to freeing us from our taste for comfort, our status quo, our inertia.  Many good reasons  justify this affection for a God associated with a certain creative force ; a love for life in all its dynamism, a passion for God considered as the life force, the strength of political resistance to dogmatic religious thought.  But a world so enlivened by this God of movement could turn out to be inhospitable, should we remove from Him the benefits that flow from a God of stability. Indeed, what is God, except that ever improbable equation of adventure and peace, movement and its cessation, creativity and anchoring. In the heart of torment, when everything goes awry, it is the Biblical idea of a « rock » that recovers its shining truth and the words of the psalmist their delicious flavor. « The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. » (Genesis 18 :2) How magnificent ! Therefore, God is That which, within us, can be « eternal. »

God isThat which allows us to be, in other words grants us self-worth freed from all requirement of movement, projects, realizations. « My stronghold » thus becomes this God Who is beyond the animate and the inanimate, even beyond whatever makes an existence guided by Him into a creative dynamic force. As such, we can say that God is absolute, and that this absolute is liberation. But first we need to have deconstructed the very image of stability in order to save it from the threat of deathly rigidity and thus find it anew.
