It appears to me that the political left is rooted, as is Marxism, in the Judeo-Christian ideal of fraternity, solidarity, especially with the poorest of the poor, and in the respect due one’s neighbor, particularly if he is underprivileged : this is the foundation of the traditional message transmitted by Christian churches.
These values have been neglected in present-day France (and elsewhere in Europe). The striking defeat of the left seems to me to be on a par with the general foundering of the churches.
On the other hand, the far right is rooted in a clannish mindset, one of selfishness, self-centredness and scorn for others : « values » that are the exact opposite of Biblical teachings and which recent elections seem to show as having the wind in their sails.
The ascending curve of the National Front Party (le Front National) parallels the nasty religious fundamentalism of the Salafists and Boko Haram, fundamentalist Catholicism and even, in some ways, Christian evangelicals.
Political thought and religious meditation seem to stem from one and the same analysis.
